Three Films I’ve Recently Watched – Mini-Reviews #2

It’s my day off and G woke me up at 6 am! I’m not one to wallow in bed really but still that takes the biscuit.

What better way to make up for it though than to catch up on a handful of films I’ve seen recently. Why not, eh? I’ll keep it short and sweet, I promise.

The-Harvest-poster-Michael-ShannonThe Harvest (2013)

I was so looking forward to seeing this film as I really like Samantha Morton and hadn’t seen her in a while. The trailer made it look very tense in a Hitchcockian (lite) kind of way and I was fully on board the premise. Sadly, this story, of a sickly boy kept under lock and key by his over-protective mother fell a little flat.

Performances were good as always. Michael Shannon has the kind of face that goes against the domesticity of this role, it’s odd to see General Zod fussing over his sick son but he convinced me. Morton makes you feel uncomfortable from the get go and you just know something’s amiss in this set up. As soon as neighbour Maryann turns up and befriends sickly Andy through his bedroom window, the calm facade begins to slip.

The thing is, the end reveal is sinister as fudge but once we start to work out what’s happening, it’s all a bit *meh*. Sure, we root for Andy and Maryann, even Michael Shannon (ooop minor *spoiler alert!*) but it’s executed in such a lacklustre way that by the ending I just felt tired and bored. Conclusion: Meh.

Compliance (2012)compliance

This small independent, based around one location is superb. God knows how I’m going to review it without giving anything away.

Based on true events (which will shock you), it focuses around a prank caller who convinces the manager of a fast food restaurant to interrogate a young employee, alleging that she has stolen from a customer’s purse.

The cast are so convincing that I felt like I was part of the staff, standing around mulling over the dilemma before them. In particular, Ann Dowd, as Sandra, makes you swing back and forth between pity and frustration as she manages the situation. As for Becky (played by Dreama Walker of Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23), you’ll be screaming at the screen: at her and for her.

In short, this is one of the most terrifying films I’ve ever seen and it’s not even a horror movie. It says a lot about human nature, puts you inside a situation that makes you think and is just plain nasty. I very highly recommend it.

Another one word title, another fantastic, ‘smaller’ movie with less bells and whistles, more overall wow factor.

At first glance this is not my kind of film at all. Sure, I love a parallel universe as much as the next nerd but I’m not a great sci-fi lover. Then I remember how much I’ve loved recent films such as Predestination and I wonder how true the above statement is.

A group of friends gather for a dinner party while a comet passes overhead, causing f**king weird stuff to happen.

You have to concentrate on this baby as the story unfolds, twists and turns; as the characters realise that something untoward is happening just up the street, which closer to them than they think.

As they communicate with the neighbours, who may or may not be them in an alternative reality, can they keep it together or will cracks start to form within the group?

Hmmmmm, well I can’t tell you that, can I? More because I wouldn’t be able to explain it any better than the film does. But I really love the ending which had me slapping my forehead and exclaiming “OH MY FRICKIN’ GOD, WHAT NOW? UGGGHHHHHHHHHH!” because I am nothing if not eloquent in the face of surprise.

Watch this someone and then tell me what you think, please!

And that’s me for today’s thrilling installment of Three Films I’ve Watched Recently. I’ll be back on Monday with my review of The Monkey’s Paw (2013) in collaboration with my movie boo, Jillian. See you there!

  1. I saw an episode of Law and Order SVU that was based on the real life events in Compliance and looked up the facts afterward. Definitely horrible and awful to think actually happened! I didn’t know there was a film based on it though! Hope your early morning wasn’t too terrible! 🙂 xx
